Local Transport

Metro & Subway

Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Sapporo all have excellent subway systems. Buy an IC card (Suica or PASMO) for seamless payment.

IC Cards (Suica/PASMO)

Rechargeable transit cards that work on virtually all trains, buses, and even convenience stores across Japan. Buy at any station kiosk.

Taxis

Clean and safe but expensive. Starting fare around ¥500-700 ($3.50-4.70). Use for short distances or late-night travel.

City Buses

Comprehensive bus networks in all cities. Pay with IC card or exact change. Kyoto's bus system is particularly useful for temple-hopping.
